Los Angeles-based MATRIARCHS has revealed a new animated video for the updated version of the track “Deadman,” which originally appeared on the metallic hardcore collective’s 2015 debut album Scandalous Jointz, featuring band’s current lineup.
The single, featuring vocalist K Enagonio, guitarist Carlos Pagan and founding member Ben Levi, was March 2. The video is available today, exclusively via Ghost Cult at https://www.ghostcultmag.com/exclusive-video-premiere-matriarchs-share-animated-video-for-deadman/.
“‘Deadman’ is a song about the struggles of the working class and the tools the 1% use to influence our decision making and priorities and liberating ourselves from that,” Levi says. “I think the themes are even more relevant today, given our dependence and blind trust in technology, which we are dependent on for our everyday activities and our primary source of information. As a society, we are as divided now as ever before, even with technology and social media being marketed as tools that bring us closer together. This song is about rebelling against all masters, gurus and self-proclaimed distributors of truth to learning to trust our own intuition and judgement. It’s also an extremely fun and heavy song and we wanted to do something different and special with the visuals.”
Formed in 2014, MATRIARCHS, began strictly as Levi’s studio project. The project was inspired by the guitarist’s affinity for modern European Beat Down and ‘90s New York metallic hardcore. Levi had played with drummer Alfred Santa Cruz, bassist Miguel Vasquez and guitarist Marty Cole in several other projects throughout the previous decade, making them obvious choices when recruiting a lineup to join his creative process. After playing their first show to a packed house, the boys never looked back.
An ambitious release produced by Nick Jett of Terror and mastered by Matt Hyde (LionheartHatebreedDeftones), Scandalous Jointz fuses together the visual aesthetic and presentation of more thought-provoking heavy acts with the sonic ferocity and energy of hardcore.
Following a few national festivals and two tours later, the band went on hiatus to reflect the general direction and purpose of the band. In 2018 MATRIARCHS parted ways with vocalist Richard Barthel.
After teaming up with veteran guitarist Carlos Pagan and powerhouse vocalist K Enagonio mid-pandemic, MATRIARCHS found the fire it needed. In K, the band finds its truest voice. The band’s second album, Year of the Rat, was written and recorded during quarantine, and released via KnucklehedzINC/Upstate Records in the fall of last year.
