“Rasputin,” Baphometallized!

On All Hallows’ Eve, The Burned Over descends once more with “Rasputin,” a haunting transformation of Boney M.’s 1978 disco classic into an apocalyptic hymn of doom and desire. The standalone single and video arrive October 31, 2025—summoning a union of heavy metal, horror, and historical mysticism.

Following their acclaimed debut The Last Great Awakening (released June 27, 2025), the “Baphometal” duo—Kim Dylla (Cruachan, Ekktoplasm, ex–GWAR) and Mark Dannells (GRAMMY®-nominated, EMMY®-winning producer, songwriter, and guitarist)—extend their sonic alchemy into new territory. “Rasputin” pairs Dylla’s soaring melodic invocations with the thunderous presence of guest vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe (High Parasite, ex–My Dying Bride), whose unmistakable voice conjures the eerie grandeur of early-20th-century Russia and its infamous mystic.

“I’ve always thought this song would easily translate into a metal version,” says Dannells. “The story of Rasputin’s sinister influence over the Romanovs, paired with the song’s vocal interplay, was perfect for balancing Aaron’s harsh delivery with Kim’s melodic counterpoint. The video—mostly animated—fuses elements of horror set in early 20th Century Russia with a surreal, Lovecraft-meets-Ralph Bakshi aesthetic.”

The video was created by Hey Beautiful Jerk, the award-winning production company founded by Mark Szumski and Gina Niespodziani, renowned for their visually arresting work with Mastodon, High on Fire, and the 30th-anniversary reimagining of Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister’s “Hellraiser.” Together, they bring The Burned Over’s sinister vision to life through a fever dream of occult symbolism, animation, and apocalyptic spectacle.

Drums were performed by Beau Brandon (Withered). “Rasputin” was mixed by Kevin “131” Gutierrez (Paul McCartney, Shinedown, A Sound of Thunder).

“Rasputin” arrives as both tribute and transformation—a resurrection of one of pop’s strangest legends, recast in obsidian flame. It’s not nostalgia. It’s necromancy.

Kim Dylla:

When Mark Dannells first played me his compositions for The Burned Over, I was intrigued by their depth and originality. Over the past 25 years, I have been the singer for many Metal bands with a varied palette of styles. Honing a haunting and melodic vocal sound to weave throughout Mark’s masterful guitar work has proved my favorite musical endeavor yet. Lyrically I mesh historical texts with the more universal occult themes ensconced in the Age of Spiritualism. After 5 years of musical gestation, Baphometal was birthed in the form of The Last Great Awakening, our violent and ariose hymn to the eternal dance of duality.

Mark Dannells:

I’ve worked as a bandleader, sideman, and producer on a wide range of musical projects over the years. The Burned Over is the culmination of those experiences, infused with my deep love for folk horror films and occult history. When I began writing for this project, Kim Dylla quickly proved to be the perfect creative foil—her melodic and lyrical contributions helped shape this introduction to BAPHOMETAL- The Last Great Awakening.
